Whales

Artie and Rena came with us, so we ventured out to the area where Daniel knew after eight years of experience, that we would see the whales.

My Mike

Here is Mike waiting for Daniel, the ponga whale guide, to get the boat ready. After leaving the rocky shoreline we had to stop because Daniel had forgotten to leave the rope onshore.

Old Man

We check into San Ignacio Springs B&B before the whale watching event the next day. There were some little well-appointed rooms, and a few yerts. Artie and Rena stayed in a yert by the lagoon. Mike and I got a nice little casita further back. There were a number of gringos staying that night, so we ate a fantastic dinner prepared by our hosts, all sitting at a huge long table. In the square we spotted an old man sitting in a chair with his dog. That night there we watched the moon rising through the palm trees at the lagoon. It was gorgeous.

Two Clowns with Cigars

What can I say? These two clowns with cigars were full of fun, even if they did leave a lingering haze in the air.

On the road to whale watch

There was an amazingly beautiful area of salt flats as we drove toward San Ignacio for a whale watching event.

Pig Races

We sponsored a pig for the Mulege Annual Pig Races, and we called him Artie, after our visitor, Arthur Traub. Arthur is a pretty highend shrink, so he whispered some psychobabble to Artie, and even doused him with some cerveza, but Artie lost the race anyway. Then the three biggest losers of the races entered a race for the Biggest Loser, but Artie was pushed ahead of another pig, against his will, mind you...which put him across the line first instead of last...so...he lost the loser's race. I know...complicated...

Canyon Shots

We never found the cave paintings...apparently they were in an adjacent canyon, but the walk was spectacular. Here is a shot of Rena and Artie having a pretty cool time. I also found a handsome hiker there....I think he is a keeper!

Lanterns and Berrries

In the canyon we saw two remarkable bushes. One had, I swear, Chinese Lanterns on it, and the other had dark berries. What they really were is a mystery to us.

Huck Tom and Becky

Gary and Tracy took us for a very long ride, then a really rough road, and into a canyon to see some cave paintings. Gary had a secret map!

The Big Unit

On January 22nd, Mike and Gary decided to enter into a weight loss contest for one month. Here is a shot of Mike on the treadmill watching a fishing show with his sunglasses on.

Santa Inez

Half an hour's drive, then a long dirt road takes us to Santa Inez beach. It is a gorgeous, long beach with white sand and loads of shells. Here is a shot of Arthur with pup Artie...yep, his namesake.

Mulege Mission

One of the main attractions here is the Mulege Mission. Artie and Rena enjoyed walking the grounds with us. From the top of the hill one can overlook the beautiful meandering river, and the thousands of date palms which have grown all over Mulege, stemming from the original ones planted by the Jesuits.

Ooops...one down

Crossing over the little bridge from town the other day, we glanced over to one of the vendors who are often there selling their wares. Tight jeans are quite the thing for women here

At the prison

Artie and Rena Traub decided being with us in Mulege for a couple of weeks was a much better idea than staying at home in Salt Lake City this time of year. Mike and I took them to check out the old Mulege open-air prison, which is now a museum, but they were closed for renovation for another month. Too bad...it is a cool place to visit with lots of relics and even a Sputnik!
